There's nothing quite like looking up and seeing the moon and stars on a clear night, but in the event of cloudy skies or bad weather, we've found the next best thing.

These glowing moon and planet-like ceiling and table lights, sold in the Pulsar Moonlight Etsy shop, are handmade by Italian artist and astrophysicist Maria Elena. Thanks to the scientific images from NASA that she uses for research, the artist is able to hand paint each one with realistic craters, depressions, and shadows to resemble the moon and other plants like Neptune and Jupiter.

Each lamp is made from upcycled garden globes and painted by hand. Maria ensures no two lamps are the same by using a variety of paints and layering techniques. "Every moon has six layers, each to give a different effect," Maria told Bored Panda. "To make one moon takes about 4-6 hours of work."

The illuminated globes can be displayed both indoors and outdoors, and can be customized to your liking when you place an order in the Etsy store. Once the lamp is at home, you can also change the color of your moon by using a white light with blue undertones, or white light with golden undertones.

And here's the best part—not only do they add a touch of astronomical beauty to your home, but the sale of each light also benefits animal charities. Maria, who's an animal lover with eight cats, donates all of the profits to charity organizations. There's never been a better reason to grab your favorite blanket, curl up in a comfy chair, and take in the nighttime glow of the nearest moon.
