Then and Now: The 1996 Women's Gymnastics Team

Here's what the Magnificent Seven have been up for the past 20 years.

In 1996, the U.S. made Olympics history when the women's gymnastics team became the first American team to take home the gold for the sport. Known as the Magnificent Seven, these ladies became overnight celebrities. As we head into the 2016 Summer Games in Rio, we decided to find out what these inspiring women are doing now, 20 years after they became America's sweethearts.

THEN: Kerri Strug

Kerri Strug's iconic vault went down in Olympics history when she famously performed the exercise despite having badly injured her ankle in a previous attempt.

Kerri married attorney Robert Fischer in 2010 and the couple now has two children, Tyler, 4, and Alayna, 2. After announcing her retirement from gymnastics, Kerri went to Stanford to earn her master's degree in sociology.

THEN: Jaycie Phelps

Though Jaycie didn't win any individual gold medals in the 1996 Olympics, her scores helped the team win an overall gold.

After her Olympics run, Jaycie co-founded the Jaycie Phelps Athletic Center, where she coaches Olympics hopefuls.

THEN: Dominique Moceanu

We best remember Dominique's 1996 Olympics run for her dazzling floor exercise to "Devil Went Down to Georgia," which was oh-so appropriate for the Atlanta host city.

Dominique has become an author, penning a memoir, Off Balance, as well as a young adult series, The Go-for-Gold Gymnasts.

THEN: Shannon Miller

Shannon, who proudly took home the gold medal in '96 for balance beam, is the most decorated gymnast of all time, with a combined total of 16 World Championship and Olympic medals.

In 2010, Miller announced she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Six years later, she is cancer-free and is now a spokesman for other woman combating the disease. She will also be at the 2016 games as a commentator.

THEN: Dominique Dawes

In addition to posting high scores in all her events, Dominique won an individual bronze medal, making her the first African-American to win an individual Olympic medal in women's gymnastics.

In 2010, Dominique became the chairman of the President's Council of Physical Fitness and Sports. She also has two daughters, Kateri, 2, and Quinn, 10 months.

THEN: Amy Chow

Amy took home a silver medal at the '96 games for her performance on the uneven bars, and also competed four years later in the 2000 games in Sydney.

Gymnastics isn't the only thing Amy flourished in: She is also an accomplished pianist, and a licensed physician and surgeon.

THEN: Amanda Borden

Elected by her team as captain of the Magnificent Seven, Amanda competed on floor exercise and beam at the Olympics.

NOW: Amanda Borden

Amanda has taken her gymnastics prowess to television, where she has worked as a commentator for a variety of sports channels, including ESPN and CBS Sports. As you can see here, she'll also be in Rio for the 2016 games, no doubt cheering on this year's U.S. gymnastics team.
