James Cameron is being sued by a Florida man, Stephen Cummings, who claims the Titanic director stole his family's story to create the characters of Jack and Rose in the 1997 blockbuster film.

The lawsuit claims Cameron based his movie on stories he heard about the ex-"yacht master" who had two relatives who were on board the real Titanic, TMZ reported.

So who is this real-life Jack Dawson? According to reports, Cummings's relatives were a wife who survived and a husband who — you guessed it — died after the ship sank.

Considering that over 1,500 people died on that ill-fated ship back in 1912, this scenario probably (and tragically) wasn't that uncommon. Either way, Cummings is suing Cameron for $300 million, plus 1 percent of royalties from the movie.
