After working as an air ambulance pilot for two years, Prince William shared that his job comes with many dark moments for him and his team, and sadly, tragedy struck again this week when the royal responded to an emergency call just outside of London.

A 16-year-old British teen drowned in a lake in Lee Valley Regional Park in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire yesterday after emergency crews—including Prince William—tried to rescue him, according to People. The prince surprised locals when he appeared after flying the team of responders to the scene.

"It was reported that a 16-year-old boy had been swimming in a lake when he got into difficulties," a police spokesperson told People. "A search led by the fire service was carried out. The boy was recovered from the water but sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene." Both police and water rescue experts arrived at the scene to try to save the teenager.

Eyewitnesses were surprised to see Prince William working with the emergency crews. "We knew something was up when a helicopter was flying extremely low just over the Lee Valley Park," a witness told the Mirror. "We could see it was landing so ran over to see what was going on. Little did we expect to see Prince William himself flying the helicopter. It was a very surreal moment when he left the helicopter to help with the search and rescue, he had no visible guards or protection."

This isn't the first time Prince William's work as an emergency crew member has made headlines. Back in 2016, he made news when he went above and beyond his duties by helping a man who had been struck by a tree, staying by his side even after the emergency team completed their job.
