Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have had a long road since their Australian wedding in June 2006. But after 13 years of marriage, they’ve learned how to tackle the ups and downs, and focus on what matters: their children and each other.
The pair are often the cutest couple at awards shows, making everyone say “aww” as they pause for photos on the red carpet, and basically causing us to ugly cry every time one of them makes a public speech. But the Big Little Lies star and her country singer husband had to go through a lot together before they became one of Hollywood’s most long-standing relationships. Here’s everything to know about how they met, the struggles they had to endure, and how they remain happy today.
How did Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman meet?
Keith, 51, had never been married before, but Nicole, 51, was famously wed to Tom Cruise for 10 years before they divorced in 2001. The actress buried herself in her work after the split, but she admitted that she was “the loneliest I’d ever been,” according to Entertainment Tonight.
She decided to focus on herself as much as she did her career, and that’s when she found Keith. “I was able to navigate through about five or six years and then I sort of stumbled into Keith, literally stumbled into him and in my spontaneous way, got married very quickly and we got to know each other when we were married,” she said.
As for where they stumbled into each other, it was in January 2005 at a gala. Keith posted a photo of the two together from the night, but Nicole admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that he didn’t call her for fourth months after the initial introduction! Don’t worry, though, it obviously worked out in the end, as they married the next year.
They fell in love and married quickly, but it wasn’t always easy.
In 2006, four months after their wedding, Keith entered the Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, California, for alcohol addiction. It wasn't his first stint in rehab: Keith previously addressed a drug problem at Nashville's Cumberland Heights treatment center in 1998, according to People. Nicole, who was promoting a film in Rome at the time, jumped on a flight upon hearing the news. Keith spent three months in treatment.
"I caused the implosion of my fresh marriage," he told Rolling Stone in 2016. "It survived, but it's a miracle it did. I was spiritually awoken with her. I use the expression 'I was born into her,' and that's how I feel. And for the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction."
For her part, Nicole brought a hesitancy to the marriage after her first, at age 23, lasted just 10 years. "When you're older, you've been through things, you've made mistakes," she told UK magazine Red last year. "So you come into it [a second marriage], still giddy, but wanting it to last."
Nicole and Keith have endured their fair share of divorce and separation rumors in the tabloids—while promoting her 2016 film Lion, one Aussie gossip site claimed her friendly displays of affection with director and longtime pal Garth Davis had left Keith feeling publicly disrespected—but Keith calls his wife an open book. "Nic is so unbelievably open; she doesn't keep things in or bottle them up. She's really a great communicator," he told trade publication HITS. "Because of her, if I open up, every day, I'm listening and growing and learning. If I'm a better man, it's because of her."
They continue to stay strong for their kids.
Nicole has two children, Connor, 24, and Isabella, 26, with Tom, and she and Keith share daughters Sunday, 10, and Faith, 8. Keith and Nicole are very close with their kids—Nicole even chaperones their school trips, and they have started going to church as a family.
“That’s how we’re raising our children. Keith has his own beliefs, but he comes, too,” she told Vanity Fair.
Though they have some obvious perks, Sunday and Faith still have some strict rules. “They don’t have a phone and I don’t allow them to have an Instagram,” Nicole said. “I try to keep some sort of boundaries.”
Overall, it seems the girls are following in their famous mom and dad’s footsteps. Faith plays violin, while Sunday likes to play the piano and make short films. How adorable is that!?
Now, they’re the definition of couples goals.
The couple famously don't text or email each other (aside from the occasional "sext," Keith revealed on the Ellen Show) though they talk to each other "multiple times a day," according to Rolling Stone. They also have an alleged "no more than seven days apart" rule. The policy, if it's true, explains why Keith hopped on a long-haul flight for Nicole's opening of Photograph 51 in London even though he was in the middle of a U.S. tour.
"I said, 'It's too much for you to have to fly all the way back, don't worry,' and he said, 'I'm flying,'" Nicole told People in 2015. "He flew 10 hours to come and be with me for the night, and then he flew back and did a gig. That for me is love in action. That's extraordinary. But I would do the same for him and that's what we've committed to as a couple."
